Is Surfshark good for torrenting?

Torrenting has become one of the most popular ways to download and share files online. However, torrenting also comes with many risks, including exposing your IP address, getting fined for sharing certain files, and speed throttling from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

The solution to minimize your risks while torrenting is to use a VPN service, which can help encrypt your traffic, hide your IP address, and stabilize your download speed.

There are many VPN providers out there, but Surfshark VPN has risen to become one of the most popular VPNs out there on the market, known as one of the best premium VPNs for those on a budget. But the question is, is Surfshark a good VPN for torrenting?

Keep reading to find out how Surfshark holds up as a torrenting VPN.

In a hurry? Here’s how to torrent with Surfshark

Does Surfshark allow torrenting?

Surfshark is one of the best VPNs on the market. It allows for super-fast torrenting, and all of the VPN’s servers support P2P. Thanks to its high speeds, unlimited bandwidth, and affordable price, it’s a great option for torrenting (although it does not explicitly encourage users to torrent).

Numerous tests have been conducted on Surfshark and found that there was no speed throttling or leaks on any Surfshark VPN server.

Is Surfshark good and safe for torrenting?

Surfshark is a great option for torrenting safely. Its military-grade encryption, one of the best in the market, keeps your online activities invisible to third parties and anonymous.

Surfshark also has one of the fastest tunneling protocols available on the market, WireGaurd, which allows for a fast VPN connection with minimal lag time. It keeps you safe and ensures a fast torrenting experience.

In addition to all of that, Surfshark offers split tunneling, which you can use to route the torrenting platform traffic through the VPN while leaving the rest of your apps and browsers out of it. This will help you control what the VPN uses and affect the speeds on various websites.

Finally, Surfshark also has a strict no-logs policy and has even undergone third-party audits to confirm they do not keep any user logs or data. So, you can confidently use the VPN without worrying about anyone seeing your online activity or files you’ve downloaded.

So overall, Surfshark will allow you to torrent safely and privately.

Why use Surfshark for torrenting?

Surfshark is a great VPN that has AES 256 bit encryption, P2P optimized servers, and fast speeds. You can learn more details in our full Surfshark review, but these are a few of the reasons why you should use Surfshark for torrenting:

  • Hide your IP address. Having your IP address exposed could put you at risk for DDoS attacks and could viewed or accessed by anyone who checks the seeders list while torrenting. But Surfshark can help hide your IP and prevent IP leaks.
  • Hide torrent activities. Surfshark will help hide your torrenting activity from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), so that you don’t have to worry about your ISP snooping on your activities or seeing what you’ve downloaded.
  • Bypass bandwidth throttling. If your ISP detects torrenting in your online traffic, they will throttle your connection and slow your download speed. But because Surfshark is hiding your torrenting activity, this will no longer be an issue.
  • Unblock restricted sites. Some countries block torrenting sites because of copyright issues, but Surfshark is excellent when it comes to unblocking restricted sites. This includes popular torrent sites like uTorrent, qBittorent, and Bittorent.
  • Large torrent-friendly server network. All of Surfshark’s 3,200 servers support P2P connections. For the fastest speeds, connect to the one closest to your location.
  • Strict no-logs policy. Surfshark has a very strict no-logs policy in place. This means that the VPN provider will not store any of your personal information or logs of your online activities, like which files you’re torrenting. This will keep your privacy safe. Additionally, Surfshark is located in the British Virgin Islands, which is known as a privacy-friendly location where they are not likely to be asked to share any of their users’ data.
  • Excellent security features. Surfshark has top-notch security features, so you can safely torrent. Some of the features include its kill switch, to shut down your internet connection if the VPN gets disrupted, and Camouflage Mode to hide that you’re using a VPN.
  • Whitelister. This is a very useful feature for torrenting that lets you route your torrent client through a VPN server in order to encrypt it and keep you secure while torrenting.
  • Pricing. When it comes to affordability, Surfshark is considered one of the best bargain VPNs. It has a low monthly price without sacrificing quality and features. It also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it risk-free for a month.

P2P servers

Surfshark has an extensive server network of 3,200 servers across 100 countries, and while not all of them are suitable for torrenting, there are numerous servers that are P2P-optimized servers. Once you’re torrenting on a platform, the VPN will usually automatically try to connect you to one of the P2P-optimized servers.

To find out which servers allow torrenting you can use their speed tests under “VPN Settings.” This will allow you to test the speed and performance of the servers, and you should be able to see a tab for P2P servers there.

Safety features

Being able to torrent safely and securely is crucial, as there are many risks to your data when you torrent.

Encryption protocols

Surfshark uses AES 256-bit encryption to strongly encrypt your VPN traffic. It also offers 5 VPN protocols for you to choose from, including the WireGaurd protocol and OpenVPN protocol.

Kill switch

If you’re VPN connection drops, the kill switch will activate and kick in to cut your internet connection. This ensures that you’re never left unprotected without the VPN and that your IP address never leaks.

There are two types of kill switches: a soft kill switch and a strict kill switch.

A soft kill switch becomes activated when there’s a temporary disruption or accidental disconnection. Wheras a strict kill switch will activate if the VPN connection is disrupted or lost for any reason at all.

DNS leak protection

DNS leak protection is a feature that Surfshark will always have on, and comes automatically installed. It helps prevent DNS leaks to make sure your identity and location is not exposed, and your privacy stays secure.

MultiHop

MultiHop is Surfshark’s version of double VPN, which sends your traffic through two VPN servers adding extra layers of encryption and protection, and makes it harder for third parties to track you.

CleanWeb

The CleanWeb feature serves as an ad-blocker, blocking malware, ads, and trackers. This is particularly important while torrenting, in case any of the files you torrent are filled with malware.

Our Surfshark security tests

As part of our analysis of Surfshark and how suitable it is as a torrenting VPN, we have done several security tests to fully ensure that it will keep you as secure as possible while torrenting. We particularly focused our tests on any weak points that could cause IP leaks.

DNS leak test

When we conducted a DNS leak test, we were pleased to see that zero IP leaks or weaknesses were found. Each request went through Surfshark’s DNS servers, just as it was supposed to.

IP leak tests

We did a basic IP leak test to check that the IP address was indeed being masked by the VPN. The IP check test showed no issues, and our real IP address remained undetected.

Torrent detection test

This is a very important test when it comes to Surfshark torrenting and helps determine whether Surfshark can keep you secure and protect your privacy while you’re torrenting. The test came back clean, proving that Surfshark can hide a user’s torrenting activity and let you torrent completely undetected by third parties.

Surfshark speed test when torrenting

Fast speeds are crucial when downloading torrents and to download files. We conducted speed tests on Surfshark while torrenting to see how it did. Different torrent clients will have different results, as well as different servers, so we tested it with two of the most popular ones, qBittorrent and uTorrent. We tested it on a file that was 3.11GB, and the baseline speed was 296 Mbps download/297 Mbps upload speeds.

qBittorent. Without a VPN, the average download speed was 222.14 Mbps, with a max download speed of 265.91 Mbps. The download duration was 1 minute and 52 seconds.

On Surfshark’s US-New York server, the average download speed was 171.58 Mbps, with a maximum of 210.55 Mbps. The download lasted 2 minutes and 25 seconds.

On Surfshark’s Canada-Vancouver server, the average download speed was 157.46 Mbps, with a maximum of 201.32 Mbps. The download lasted 2 minutes and 38 seconds.

uTorrent. Without a VPN, the average download speed was 162.61 Mbps, with a max download speed of 213.6 Mbps. The download duration was 2 minutes and 33 seconds.

On Surfshark’s US-New York server, the average download speed was 27.86 Mbps, with a max of 36.8 Mbps. The download took 14 minutes and 53 seconds.

On Surfshark’s Canada-Vancouver server, the average download speed was 28.17 Mbps, with a max of 34.4 Mbps. The download duration was 14 minutes and 42 seconds.

From these tests, we can conclude that the torrent speeds were significantly faster with qBittorent than with uTorrent. However, this is likely because of uTorrent and not because of Surfshark since the torrent client tends to have a lot of lag on its free version. This means the bandwidth may be going toward loading ads instead of downloading the file.
